Abstract or Goal:

This includes two 30 minute lessons which incorporate a self-awareness activity and links it to responsible behavior in the school and workplace.

Anticipatory Set:

Guidance counselor will share his/her own "Me Bag." The teacher may also share what items he/she may include in his/her "Me Bag."

Objectives:

The students will be able to talk about their personal interests and the world of work.

Instructional Input:

Guidance counselor will explain that the students will decorate brown paper bags using crayons.

Modeling: Ask students appropriate pictures that they may draw on their "Me Bags."

Check for Understanding:

Guidance counselor will give examples of appropriate and inappropriate pictures. Students will be expected to give either thumbs up or thumbs down.

Guided Practice:

Students will write their names and draw things about themselves on their "Me Bags." The guidance counselor will circulate while students work.

Independent Practice:

Guidance counselor will distribute parent letters and explain that at home they are to fill up the bag with things that say something about who they are and to include an item that represents a parent's career.

Assessment:

On day two, students share the contents of their bags. During the presentations, students will identify responsibilities that their parents and/or school personnel have at their workplaces. After all students have presented, the students will brainstorm classroom responsibilities and acceptable behaviors. Students will identify how effort by parents and students in being responsible can result in personal success.

Modifications will be utilized for special needs children.

Multicultural Connections:

Guidance counselor will choose multicultural items for his/her own "Me Bag." Traditional and non-traditional careers will be discussed as students share their "Me Bags."
