7th Grade Academy reading intervention

 

 

This school year your student will be enrolled in the Reading & Writing Workshop class. The curriculum for the Reading & Writing Workshop combines research based materials to increase student-reading abilities.  Students enrolled in Reading Writing Workshop receive instruction and practice in the application of reading skills and strategies necessary for content courses.  The skills taught include:

  • Main Idea & Details
  • Summarizing Literary Elements
  • Author?s Purpose
  • Text Structure:  Informational and Literary Texts
  • Literary Elements:  Tone, Mood, Simile, Metaphor, Personification
  • Making Inferences and Drawing Conclusions with Informational and Literary Text
  • Compare and Contrast with Informational and Literary Text

Instruction includes large group, small-group, computer-based instruction, along with individualized attention as needed.  Students will build their content-area reading abilities during the course by reading selections from the following subjects:  Science, Social Studies, and Arts & Music.

All Reading & Writing Workshop classes are kept small to allow the teacher to monitor progress and match students to appropriate texts based on reading level.  Parents can expect regular reports on student progress throughout the school year. 

Grading Policy:

25% Common Assessments

  • Common Assessments for each skill focus
  • Oral Fluency (1 x per quarter)

75% Classwork

  • Portfolio/Literacy Notebook (to include warm-up, closure, daily assessment of skill focus)
  • Graphic organizers
  • Vocabulary activities
  • Fluency

How you, as a parent or caregiver, can help?

Your student will be doing a considerable amount of reading this school year.  Take time to talk to your student about what they are reading.   Simply talking about reading helps strengthen comprehension and other reading skills.
