Mr. Shapiro's Math Menagerie
Welcome to Mr. Shapiro's website. Thanks for visiting.
We're moving into year 3 at Urbana Middle. Our first year we had a fine beginning to what we've anticipated will be a strong educational legacy. This past year we saw acceleration compared to the first year gains. Hard work from students, teachers and parents, have paid handsome dividends.
Here's a bit of my bio. I taught at Windsor Knolls Middle for 8 years working with grades 6, 7 and 8 prior to our opening of UMS in the 2006-07 school year. Before that I worked at Ballenger Creek Middle and again taught all three grades over those years. The other schools I've been at are New Market Middle, Green Valley Elementary and Waverly Elementary. This will be my 31st year teaching in Frederick County.
To earn my teaching certification I spent 4 years as a University of Maryland Terrapin. Go Terps! My son was a freshman there at first, but transferred to Syracuse University and is a junior this year. My middle child, a daughter, will begin at Montgomery College this fall and move on to College Park in the Spring. I earned a Masters of Education from Frostburg State College (before it became a University). It's fun to be a student as well as a teacher. I particularly enjoyed the homework (really).
I am Urbana MIddle School's Math Intervention teacher. I'll be working with the merit math classes most days. Other times of the day I may be working with various students who need a boost or are game for enrichment. I will be running the Continental Math League contests for all our honors students - that will run from November to March. Other duties include being a resource for our math teachers for planning, activities, etc., and running an "iLearn" computer lab during hawk time on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
