TRES Discipline Committee
A Discipline Committee was established at the end of the 2005-2006 school year for the purpose of creating a unified behavior system using a common language. The program that was designed by the Discipline Committee is based on positive reinforcement and encouragement of good behaviors.
How does the program work?
When the entire school uses unified language, steps, procedures, and materials, expectations and consequences are clear for students.
lAdditionally, students are rewarded for showing good character and school performance, and many are recognized at school assemblies. Through the use of positive reinforcement, students increase motivation to be successful.
How does this program affect my child?
As a student at Twin Ridge Elementary School, your child has daily opportunities to earn 'bamboo bucks' and 'panda paws'. Bamboo bucks have a value of one and paw prints have a value of five bucks. Bamboo bucks are handed out more frequently than panda paws, but both can be cashed in for prizes in your child's classroom or during specials. The purpose is to catch students showing exemplary behavior and following our four school rules:
Trustworthy
Responsible
Engaged in Learning
Safe
When children earn these paw prints, they put them in a box in the cafeteria. At the end of the month (usually the last Friday of the month, which also coincides with a School Spirit Day), an assembly is held during lunch. Every student has a baseball cap that is stored at school and worn on these days. The hats are decorated by the students and covered with buttons and pins when they receive awards. At the assembly, ten students from each grade have their paw prints drawn from the boxes and each of those students earn a small prize and a button. Their photos are taken as a group and displayed on a bulletin board near the front office. The photo then becomes part of a Power Point slide show, which is run during future assemblies. One of those ten children per grade are named Student of the Month.
How can my child be named Student of the Month?
Students of the Month must have: Excellent Attendance (96% or better!), A's and B's on their report cards, demonstrate good character on a daily basis, and have a panda paw print drawn from the box that month. If there is more than one student per grade who meets all of this criteria, a random selection is made.
Why would my child want to be named Student of the Month?
Being named Student of the Month is a huge honor! If your child receives this honor, his or her individual photo will be taken and displayed on a bulletin board near the front office. The photo then becomes part of a Power Point slide show, which is run during future assemblies. Additionally, your child will earn a limousine ride (courtesy of On the Town Limousines, Inc. in Mount Airy) to a local restaurant with all of the Students and Staff of the Month, for that particular month! Finally, your child will receive a Student of the Month pin for their baseball cap.
Will this program change next year?
Yes, there are continuous changes and improvements being made to our program! The panda paw print system will remain in place, but there will be exciting new additions made for the students. Just wait and see... |
