We have teamed up with Mrs. Bales' first graders to create a learning partnership known as "Buddy Classes". We get together on a weekly basis to share a variety of curriculam-based learning experiences. We have followed directions to create a turkey cookie; fluently read aloud our favorite books; used number combinations, strategies and skills to play math games; learned about Martin Luther King, Jr. and his work to establish love, peace and justice; and used the newest technology (e-pad "clickers") to take AR tests....Click on the BUDDY CLASSES page link in the upper lefthand corner to see photographs of our buddy classes in action!

Have you heard about THE FISH PHILOSOPHY we have adopted at K.E.S.? It sets the following expectations and standards of behavior. It reminds us all to "be there" and attend to task during instruction and other parts of our school day. It challenges us to have positive attitudes, even in the face of difficulties or frustrations and to make another's day by showing kindness. Finally, it gives us all permission to play once in while, after all, learning is supposed to be fun! GO FISH!

In LANGUAGE ARTS, we are reading ANCILLARY DOCUMENTS (reference sources including websites, dictionaries, atlases, encyclopedias and periodicals). Students are preparing a short research paper concerning a topic related to health, fitness or safety. In WRITING, we have learned about IDEAS, ORGANIZATION, VOICE and WORD CHOICE! We will continue our study of the 6 +1 TRAITS, learning about SENTENCE FLUENCY, CONVENTIONS and PRESENTATION in the coming months. For more information about Language Arts, click on the link for that page in the upper lefthand corner.

In MATH, students have completed a math investigation using graphing and statistics. We have completed our Quarter 3 goals and are now reviewing Quarter 1 and Quarter 2 goals to prepare for MSA testing. Following Quarter 4 testing, we will have the opportuntity for reteaching of prior skills and concepts, in addition to presenting some sixth grade goals, for enrichment.
Our STOCK MARKET GAME ends early in April! Though the market has not cooperated, our KES teams are consistently placed in the top half of 160 teams, most of which are middle and high school teams! Also, keep practicing those multiplication and division math facts! More information can be found on the MATH page. Just click on the link in the upper lefthand corner.
Our classroom schedule can be found in the list of links under "Related Documents" in the upper right hand corner. Note that students have each specials class twice per week. Whenever possible, please try to schedule appointments around the core subject classes - language arts, math, social studies and science.
