We will be following Frederick County's suggested policy for second grade, which is a total of about 20-25 minutes of homework each school night except Friday. A homework calendar will come home with your child each day. Keep this weekly calendar in your child's folder and return it to school each day so that it can be updated. Initial each night as you check in with your child about that day's assignments. Please check the backpack and take-home folder nightly to check for assignments and other important information.
All homework will be checked, but not graded, on the day it is due. Please encourage your child to carefully read homework directions and to complete the assignments neatly and accurately. Your help and cooperation is needed and appreciated!
Reading
Reading homework may be assigned almost any night. To help you child become a fluent reader who enjoys books, magazines, and other printed material, we encourage students to read for at least 15 minutes every night. Second graders will be expected to read at least 25 books this year and will be keeping track of their progress each quarter with a reading log.
Most Mondays your child will be bringing home a reading assignment which will address fluency and comprehension. These assignments will be due on Friday.
Writing
Beginning in October your child will be bringing home a home-school journal monthly. Directions for helping your child can be found in the front of the journal. This writing time is very valuable. It will allow you to see your child work through the writing process. And it will enable you to encourage and support your budding writer.
Math
Math homework will be assigned periodically. This homework will reveiw and reinforce the skills we have worked on during the school day.
Word Study
Word study homework (spelling) will usually be assigned. Check your child's homework calendar for the specific assignments for that week.
Special Projects
Throughout the year your second grader will be expected to complete special projects that will reinforce or expand on a unit of study or skill. Your child will be given plenty of advance notice to plan and prepare these projects. Look at "Important Dates" on this website for specific information of upcoming projects.
Homework Tips
Don't let homework get you down! Remember 20 minutes is all it should usually take. Provide your child with a quiet place to think and work...the dining room, bedroom, or kitchen might be good. Let your child try to work it out. If he or she needs support, be there, but don't do it for him or her. If homework turns into a battleground let your child's teacher know so that we can provide suggestions or extra help. As always, get in touch when you have a question. |
