This week's Enrichment Challenge #12 is worth 200 points: Should Torture be Legal? Are Americans Even Aware of What Their Government is Doing?
Your computer must be able to watch video for this E.C.
In October of 2007, the film Rendition was released. This film addresses the public's increasing awareness of the practice by the U.S. government to detain and torture suspected terrorist involvement.
While the film is fictional, the practice is not. Click on the link below and watch the preview of Rendition. http://www.newline.com/properties/rendition.html 1) Near the end of preview, how does Meryl Streep's character (the older blonde woman) defend the practice of rendition?
Now go to http://www.aclu.org/safefree/extraordinaryrendition/22201res20051206.html
and answer the following questions:
1) How many months was Mr. Masri detained by the CIA?
2) Summarize the 3 things Masri wants from the U.S. government.
3) Identify the 3 defendants in his lawsuit.
4) Why did the U.S. government refuse to hear his case?
5) After 23 days in a hotel room, what country was Mr. Masri taken to for interrogation?
6) Both at his hotel and later, what did Mr. Masri and other inmates refuse to do to protest their confinement?
7) In the last paragraph, what did Mr. Masri's wife think happened to him during all of this time?
Now watch the video on the top right and answer the following questions:
8) What does ACLU stand for?
9) Why is the ACLU bringing a civil lawsuit against Jeppesen Dataplan?
10) Only 2 weeks into Mr. Masri's detention, both CIA Director George Tenet and Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice were informed of Mr. Masri's situation. How much longer was Mr. Masri still detained?
It has been reported that this case of mistaken identity of Khaled el Masri was due to an error in spelling of a wanted Al Quaeda leader whose last name is "al Masri". Just yesterday, May 8th, 2008, it was reported that the real "al Masri" was captured by Iraqi police.
11) What do you think the U.S. government should do for Mr. Masri, the innocent victim? How much money would you feel is fair if your were Mr. Masri or his wife?
12) What is your opinion of the U.S. government's practice of rendition?
