K, 1, 2   Intervention

                                                                           (2008 - 2009)

welcome

This year I will be working with Kindergarten, first and second graders.  I will be using the FUNDATIONS PROGRAM with out kindergarten students and the Early Success Program with our first and second grade students.

FUNDATIONS

This program is a systematic, sequential, multi-sensory method of teaching reading and writing skills.  During the months of September, October and November and December,  the students will work on Unit 1. They will be introduced to 2 new letters a week.  We will practice letter formation, sounds and a keyword that matches each letter/sound.  A  green folder will be sent home each week with the letters/sounds which have been introduced.  Please follow the written directions found in the folders.

In Unit 2, I will teach children how to form capital letters A-Z.  They will practice alphabetical order and will introduce syllables.  In Unit 3, students will become aware that words are made up of different sounds that are blended together.  I will teach children how to blend and read three-sound short vowel sounds.

                                                                                  EARLY SUCCESS

This program is a proven research-based,classroom tested reading program.  Early Success has been developed to help children accelerate their reading abilities by teaching them effective decoding strategies and reading skillls.

The children will read 2 books per week.  The first book of the week is used for three days with the students engaged in repeated reading of and guided writing about this book.  The second book of the week extends an aspect of book 1 and is shorter and somewhat easier to read.  This book is read for the next two days and builds fluency.  A paper copy of this book is sent home for the child to read and keep at home.
